about

Recorded in Toronto in July 2023. In the words of the artist: The name of the album comes from a tourist attraction in the northern California redwoods that Val and I had stopped at briefly when we were first moving to Utah in 2017… it was appealing enough for us to stop, but it also felt like a tourist trap and we didn’t want to spend $50 or whatever to get past the gate, so we never actually went in. We’ve remained divided since then whether the name itself was any good (I didn’t want to stop in the first place…). Honestly, the title of the album was originally going to be a direct challenge to her – nobody would be able to stream the album without spending $50 to download it, and we’d have hard evidence on whether the name was alone evocative enough to draw people in. Now I’m happy to take a softer stance, having it as a book-end concept to celebrate our life immediately after Utah by remembering a piece of our life immediately before Utah. And of course, trees are mysterious and beautiful and all that and the best thing about it is that they’re also (usually) free to experience, and it’s not a bad thing to remind myself of either. As for the music in the album, it’s a bit more on the folky song-oriented side maybe of things, but overall I feel it communicates a low-grade sense of peace. I remember an Anishinaabe man once telling me that one of their traditional medicines in southern Ontario was the sound of poplar leaves rustling… and it’s great to hear of things maybe coming around with that approach elsewhere, for instance doctors in England now starting to prescribe time by the water to their patients as a form of medicine for mental health.
